NEW VOLUNTEER REQUIREMENTS AS OF JULY 1, 2026

Dear MVLA Parents and Families,

We are grateful for the many ways our community supports students, classrooms, and school activities. Whether you currently volunteer, are thinking about getting involved, or simply want to stay informed, we are sharing an important update that affects anyone wishing to volunteer at MVLA schools.

About California Senate Bill 848

California Senate Bill 848, authored by Senator Perez, updates statewide standards for volunteer clearance in K–12 schools. Designed to increase safety and consistency in how districts screen volunteers, this law applies to all school volunteers statewide.

New Volunteer Clearance Requirements

Under the new law, all volunteers are now required to meet a single unified clearance standard, regardless of role or frequency of service. This includes:

For Current MVLA Volunteers

If you were cleared previously as a Level 1 or Level 2 volunteer and wish to continue volunteering, you must complete the additional steps for full clearance beginning July 1, 2026. MVLA has discontinued processing Level 1 and Level 2 clearances.

If you previously completed the Level 3 volunteer clearance process, you will simply renew your active volunteer status by completing the annual Keenan Safe Schools training when you receive the email with a link. If your license or TB has expired, you will receive a separate email to update that in our database.

If your student has graduated from MVLAHSD and you no longer wish to volunteer, please contact mvla.volunteers@mvla.net and we will deactivate your account. This will prevent any annoying emails to complete trainings or update information. 🙂

For New or Prospective Volunteers

We welcome all families interested in volunteering! All new volunteers will follow the unified clearance process described above. To get started, visit our volunteers webpage.

We appreciate your patience and partnership as we implement these safety standards. Ensuring the well-being of our students is our highest priority, and we are committed to making this process as smooth as possible for every family.

Thank you for your continued support of MVLA students and staff.
