Student Study Team (SST)
Student Study Team (SST)
What is a Student Study Team (SST)?
Within the MTSS process, a Student Success Team (SST) is a “learning support” umbrella structure that brings together all support service providers at a school site. The SST focuses on referred students and coordinates respective programs, interventions, and services to promote their academic success. The SST provides early identification, assessment, referral, support, and service coordination for students experiencing academic, attendance, or behavior/social challenges that impact school success.
The SST works to provide:
-
Support for the student in their regular classroom(s)
-
Support for a student who is having academic, social, or behavioral difficulties
-
Site-based resources to support a student's needs
-
Specific interventions and/or strategies for students which are delivered on specified timelines
-
An atmosphere where parent participation is encouraged and desired
-
Typically, referrals are made by a classroom teacher, a school counselor, or a school administrator who identifies a student experiencing academic, behavioral, social, or emotional challenges. Parents may also request an SST if they have a concern by contacting the student’s assigned site administrator.
-
The team includes the parent/s, the student, an administrator, the student’s school counselor, the student teachers, and other specialists, as appropriate.
-
Participants share information and observations about the student, focusing on areas of strength, as well as concerns. After the team identifies the student’s specific needs, possible solutions are developed, and an action plan is created. This plan includes detailed goals and objectives, a time frame for completion of the interventions, modifications, or program changes, and the criteria for measuring the effectiveness of the changes. A follow-up meeting will be scheduled to report back on the success of the interventions and/or to suggest additional interventions and supports.
-
After a referral is made to an SST, an MVLA staff member will contact all parties involved (student, parent/s, teachers, school counselor, and other specialists, as appropriate) to schedule the meeting. The MVLA staff member will also send an email to the student's teachers and the school counselor to gather information about the student's strengths, challenges, and prior interventions and supports. Parent/s and the student will also be contacted to share relevant information about the student's strengths, challenges, and prior experiences.
