Welcome to the District

Welcome to the Mountain View-Los Altos Union High School District serving high school students and adults in the communities of Los Altos, Los Altos Hills, and Mountain View.  Since its inception in 1902, our district has a proven record of academic excellence.  Last year, many of our graduates matriculated to the most highly selective colleges and universities in the country, as over 98 percent of our graduating seniors pursue a college degree.  This year over 97 percent of our graduates passed the California High School Exit Examination in both mathematics and English.  Our strong scores on Advanced Placement exams, SAT, and SAT II are among the highest in the state.   Newsweek ranked both comprehensive high schools in the top 500 out of over 20,000 high schools in the United States.

Alta Vista, Los Altos and Mountain View High Schools received the maximum six-year accreditation from our WASC state review teams.  Less than twenty percent of high schools statewide receive the maximum term length.

The new Alta Vista High School campus was opened in 2006 for students who benefit from this California Model Continuation High School.  Our continuation school is one of many non-traditional options that we offer our students in addition to our two comprehensive high schools.

Other programs that we make available to our students are a Middle College Program at Foothill Community College, independent study at our MVLA adult school, our online NOVA option, and our new Freestyle Academy of Communication Arts and Technology that opened in 2006.  This special program for juniors and seniors has the latest equipment and training for students who want intensive state-of-the-art instruction in all aspects of multi-media production.  Freestyle is supported by The City of Mountain View, Microsoft, Apple, and Adobe.

Our adult school serves over 11,000 students in our community providing a full complement of courses and programs.

The MVLA Education Foundation provides additional resources to support our instructional program through the generosity of our parents and the community.  The foundation has committed to raising $700,000 this year to fund lower class sizes in English and mathematics, tutorial centers, extended hours for our libraries, high school to college assistance, instructional materials, new technology and college/career centers for our students.  The theme for this year’s foundation fundraising is to give students the tools and assistance to succeed at high school academics and the college and vocational school application process from High School to College and Beyond.

Our schools continue to attract and retain the very best teachers, support staff and administrators.  The district encourages our parents and community to become active partners in the education of our students.  We look forward to working together this academic year in support of our students so that they may grow in mind, body, and spirit.

Thank you for your interest and support of our schools.

Sincerely,

Dr. Barry R Groves, Superintendent
