2019 English Language Learner Awards

There’s a lot to learn in high school. That challenge is even greater when a student comes to America with little or no English language. Students come to the MVLA High School District speaking many different languages, including Arabic, Filipino, Mandarin, Russian, Punjabi, Spanish, Vietnamese and others. For the time they are in high school, MVLA aims to teach them both English and high school curriculum.

To do that, MVLA has a special English Language Development program (ELD). The primary goal of this program is to develop each student’s English fluency while also teaching Common Core and other state standards for academic achievement, and district and state graduation requirements.

Recently there was a year-end celebration of achievement for the 20 ELD students in the school district. Students were honored for several kinds of accomplishments: their academic achievement, strongest speaking, intellectual curiosity, work ethic, leadership, being most improved or most engaged as a class participant, and more. Nearly 30 students were recognized for having earned a GPA of 3.0 or higher.

Board Trustee Fiona Walter thanked the teachers for the celebration and said, “I am completely in awe of the wrap-around support that our teachers provide. The appreciation shows on the students' faces. Folklorico dancers gave an amazing performance and the student emcees were wonderful, too.  Tough to be up front all night and they did a great job. It was an uplifting celebration of the culmination of a full year's work.”

Jasmine Velazco won the Burwen Scholarship through MVLA Scholars and is headed to Northeastern University. The Burwen Education Foundation has provided full college scholarships for 19 AVID students and smaller scholarships for more than 70 students over the past 15 years.

MVLA Associate Superintendent Margarita Navarro explains that the District works to, “ensure that our district’s English Learners have equal opportunity for academic achievement and to reach language proficiency comparable to that of average native speakers within a reasonable time frame. Teachers and administrators collaborate to help students reach their highest personal potential.”

A summary of all class topics and student awards is in the list below.
