MVLA Earns Silver in California Green Ribbon School Awards

State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Thurmond recently announced that 20 schools, three districts, and one county won 2019 California Green Ribbon Schools Awards, which honors schools that conserve resources while promoting health and environmental literacy.

MVLA earned a silver award and is one of only 17 public schools in California and the only school district in all Bay Area counties to win an award.

Green Ribbon Schools demonstrate exemplary achievement in three “pillars.”

  • reduce environmental impact and costs.
  • improve the health and wellness of schools, students, and staff.
  • provide effective environmental education that teaches many disciplines and is especially good at effectively incorporating STEM education and green career pathways.

Los Altos High student Anya Gupta collaborated with the District and community volunteer Sybil Cramer in completing the 40-page application. She told Trustees that she was eager for students to foster sustainability. A first project is to find viable replacements for one-use plastic bottles on campuses, then she plans to evaluate student parking management.

“We should all be proud of Anya’s and Sybil’s initiative to apply for this award,” said MVLA Superintendent Jeff Harding. “We appreciate their efforts which benefit our students, community and the environment.”

State Superintendent Tony Thurmond congratulated this year’s honorees, saying, “California Green Ribbon Schools engage our kids to understand and act on behalf of their environment. From global-sized problems like climate change to local challenges like water quality, sustainability education grows the creativity, critical thinking skills, and environmental literacy our students need in order to lead now and into the future.”

A representative of Assemblymember Marc Berman presented a certificate of achievement to Gupta, Cramer and Associate Superintendent of Business Services Mike Mathiesen.
