“Do Your Best” on the SBAC Test
Each spring, students in grades three through eight and high school participate in the California Assessment of Student Performance and Progress (CAASPP). The CAASPP is also referred to as the SBAC exam, named after the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium, which created the test.
Beginning April 22, MVLA 11th graders will be taking the SBAC test which is designed to monitor student progress and ensure that all students leave high school ready for college and career. This exam is taken online and includes computer adaptive tests in English language arts and mathematics, with a performance task in both subjects. Also part of the mandated CAASPP assessment is a test for science, given to all 12th graders. This test is aligned to the new Next Generation Science Standards (NGSS).
Following the spring 2019 testing, student score reports will be available to families through the Aeries Student Information System (SIS). These reports will include an overall score, a description of the student’s achievement level for English language arts and mathematics, and other relevant information, including an assessment of the student’s readiness for college.
You can see the types of questions students will encounter on the computer-based test, and students can view the practice test online on the California Department of Education (CDE) Smarter Balanced Practice Test web page.
MVLA asks parents to talk with their students about the importance of these tests and to encourage them to do their very best.
There are many reasons why these tests are important to students and to schools:
- There are intrinsic and extrinsic benefits and rewards derived from graduating from a top-ranked public high school, including access to top-ranked, prestigious universities.
- Students who earn a score of 3 - “Standard met” or higher - can be eligible for the Seal of Biliteracy
- Students may use CAASPP results to determine a placement into math and English courses at California State universities and participating California community colleges.
- The test is closely aligned with the Common Core and assesses what students learn and practice daily in their classes, including critical thinking, problem solving, application and analysis.
- Test results help MVLA understand what skills our students are learning so we can strengthen and improve our instructional program.
- This test is excellent practice for other tests students will encounter in the work world and in higher education.
- Test results are reflected in the California School Dashboard Report, the state’s system for measuring the quality of California schools. Colleges and universities assess the quality of a high school in part by a school’s dashboard results.
- Federal grants and funding is tied to a school’s ability to demonstrate that a minimum of 95% of eligible students participated in the CAASPP.
Please encourage your student to do his/her very best on the test, so that the results will be a true reflection of what our students know and are capable of doing. While parents, under Title 5, Section 852 have the right to submit a written request to exempt their student from all or part of this assessment, we hope that you recognize the value and importance of having your student participate in the CAASPP. Requests for exemptions must be submitted in writing to Georgina Davila at Los Altos High School, Marivic Cagatao at Mountain View High School or Debi Rudd at Alta Vista High School by April 10.
MVLA students who are not enrolled at LAHS or MVHS, will test on the following days:
- Alta Vista High School: week of April 29th
- Freestyle: ELA exam at Freestyle on April 23 and 24; Math exam at their home school on April 25 and 26
- Middle College & College Now: week of April 22nd at Foothill College
