Based on state guidelines, our county has moved from the purple designation (the most severe for covid19 activity or wide-spread) to a red designation ( a bit less severe or sustained). According to state guidelines this means that “Schools may not reopen fully for in-person instruction until the county has been in the Substantial (Red) Tier for two weeks. Local school and health officials may decide to open elementary schools, and school officials may decide to conduct in-person intervention for a limited set of students in small cohorts.” (covid19.ca.gov) At this time, there is no information as to when entire secondary schools may re-open.
However, the County Office of Education has updated its guidelines on cohorts including those at high schools. These guidelines will allow for up to 16 within a cohort including adult supervisors. We would like to update you on a shift in how we will take attendance on Wednesdays. As we work to continuously improve the practical and technical components of distance learning, we discovered this area was in need of streamlining and simplifying. After gathering feedback from parents,staff, and students, it became clear we needed to separate assignments from attendance. We will be piloting a central attendance system to ensure accurate attendance.
Students will be participating in a brief (5-15 minute) activity in which at completion their student ID number will be submitted for their attendance this day. The activity may be a survey to gather student feedback and input on Distance Learning, a short Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) module, or different types of learning activities.
The attendance activity will be sent to each student's school email address. They will receive this email at 7am on Wednesday and have until 12pm noon to complete the brief activity. The goal of this day is to take attendance centrally once to document ‘present’, to provide a meaningful activity for students, and to keep the rest of the day focused on the lessons and learning from their classes and teachers.

The next regular Board of Trustees meeting will be held on September 14, 2020 at 7:00 p.m. Topics on the agenda include a public hearing on the Los Altos High School Expansion Preliminary Environmental Assessment, an update on Fall 2020 Reopening, a report on Summer School 2020, and the Board will consider certification of the district’s 2019-2020 Unaudited Actuals Financial Report.
