MVLA Update - July 3, 2020
School Reopening Process
This week, MVLA received information from the Santa Clara County Public Health Department to help guide the reopening of Santa Clara County K-12 schools for the 2020-2021 school year. The report provides requirements and recommendations but notes that whether schools can move forward with physically reopening for in-person instruction in the fall will depend on the containment of COVID-19 in the weeks ahead.
Today, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Officer Dr. Sara Cody announced a new order that puts in place long-term risk reduction measures. The order allows certain additional activities to resume, but also puts in place significant additional containment measures to control the spread of COVID-19.
We continue to work on an MVLA Reopening Framework that will outline our plans for distance learning, physical returns, and traditional returns with safety protocols. We are preparing for multiple scenarios as the landscape of COVID-19 changes rapidly and unexpectedly. The Fall 2020 opening recommendation will be brought to the MVLA Board of Education in July. While we are making final plans, we are continuing to train and plan for all possibilities. Over the last few months, we have engaged over 100 staff members and parent groups to be part of this detailed planning effort.
The preparation has included ordering Personal Protective Equipment (PPE), preparing schedules for all three scenarios, providing professional development for staff, as well as continuing to share our updates.
We will use Canvas as our new learning management system for distance learning and as a hub for our teaching and learning applications. We have over 150 teachers, counselors, and administrators training on the system this summer. We will be offering ongoing professional development with this new application throughout the year. We were asked at a parent meeting this week whether students will also have training on the system, and, yes, that is being planned. Google Classroom will still be available with the integrated system as well as other commonly used applications. This fall we will be assigning grades to students for their classes. The credit/no credit allowance was only for the Spring of 2020.

School Reopening Hygiene & Safety Protocols
In addition to the guidelines recommended by County Public Health, MVLA will also use guidance for hygiene and safety as recommended by the State of California’s Office of Emergency Services and Department of Education in the event of a limited or full return.
The state will be providing school districts an initial 60-day supply of Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) including face coverings for students and staff, hand sanitizer, and contactless thermometers. Previously, at the beginning of the shelter-in-place, MVLA procured 2,000 masks and 250 bottles of hand sanitizer so we are relatively well-stocked for now. MVLA has also procured PPE. We are also purchasing plexiglass shields for classrooms and school offices.
District staff have also identified office-type workstations in campus locations that traditionally have a higher volume of activity - including reception areas, attendance offices, finance offices, and library desks - where we will install plexiglass-type shields. These will be ordered in the next two weeks.
We are also identifying the type and quantities of touchless hand sanitizer dispensers and supplies to put in classrooms, office areas, and common walkways.
We are working with campus staff to determine directional arrows for hallways and walkways, identifying points of entry and exit to school, and determining the number of students who can safely be in a classroom at one time. We are also preparing for required cleaning protocols for when students and staff return to campus. Many of these protocols are included in the County Public Health Department Guidelines for Reopening Schools.
MVLA is in the process of creating an agreed-upon schedule for each of the three scenarios. We have a newly approved schedule in the event of full return that was approved prior to our school closure in the Spring. We also have drafts of hybrid and distance learning schedules. We are in the process of finalizing our proposed schedules and will bring to the board of education for approval.
Board of Trustees
A Special Closed Session and Board Meeting will be conducted at 10:00 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2020. The agenda may be viewed here. At this meeting, the Board will appoint the newly created position of district Distance Learning Administrator.
Special Board meetings will be scheduled during July 2020 as necessary. The next regular Board of Trustees meeting will be held on August 10, 2020.
Summer Enrichment Offerings
MVLA launched the Summer Enrichment & Resources portal recently to provide students with various opportunities to engage in learning and explore topics of interest. The portal links students to recommended sites and connects them to online subscriptions using their unique MVLA credentials.
MVLA students can practice math or literacy skills by signing into IXL or Albert.IO. Students may also download the Algebra Skill Handouts that will help them enhance their algebra fundamentals that are essential to any higher math level.
In addition, the portal recommends sites for students who are planning for college or preparing for the SAT/ACT. Lastly, students will also find a section with resources for social-emotional wellbeing.
