MVLA Update - January 9, 2021

Challenging Times
The last 48 hours have detailed daunting challenges to our democracy and the peaceful transition of power. On January 6, 2021, a day that should have been a celebration of democracy, those threats to our democratic ideals culminated in lawlessness, terror, injury, and death.
There may never be a more important time than now to ensure we are supporting our students and providing a safe environment to share concerns, ask questions, and have their voices heard. It’s also important to understand our students, like we as parents and educators, may have varied reactions to the current events.  Many are questioning the disparate treatment toward violent rioters and peaceful protesters. The topic has divided the nation and shone a bright light on longstanding racial and social injustices. There is no way to make sense of what we witnessed in our nation’s capital without also viewing the events through the lens of racism and white supremacy that was on full display.
One of the things that makes the MVLA community so special – and has been so clearly demonstrated during the ongoing pandemic – is the determination to look out for one another, support each other, and find ways to remain resilient and resourceful in the face of the unknown. We are here to model productive discussion and to help students to work through these complicated issues. Thank you for your ongoing support during this difficult time.

California Budget Update
On Friday, Governor Gavin Newsom presented as part of the state’s proposed $227 billion 2021-2022 budget, a funding allocation of $89.2 billion for K-12 and community colleges next year. This includes:
  • $4.6 billion for summer school and extra learning time to address academic setbacks students have faced during the COVID-19 pandemic
  • $2 billion to help schools as they transition to more in-person learning
  • $400 million for school-based mental health services
We are studying the potential impacts to MVLA and will provide further information in a future update.
Wellness, Health and Safety Brown Bag Session
This week we held a Brown Bag discussing our MVLA programs supporting student and staff wellness. We had a number of parents asking us to share the presentation; it is available here.  The recording of the session is available here, and we encourage families to view at their convenience.
We greatly appreciate the participation of so many in these sessions. If you missed any of the live events, you can check out our list of recorded sessions (listed under Resources on our Communications and Information page), and view them online at your convenience.
COVID-19 Testing
COVID-19 testing is part of our MVLA response to the pandemic. We are grateful for the partnership of El Camino Hospital as we continue to provide this opportunity. Testing is currently available for staff and students on each comprehensive campus. The testing dates this month are Wednesday, January 13, and Wednesday, January 27. You can find the information here.
New MVLA HelpDesk
We have recently implemented a new Technology HelpDesk; students can use this system when needing assistance with a variety of technology issues.  While some of the menu choices are only relevant to staff, we are hoping students (and families) find this service helpful as we continue with distance learning.
Directions for using the HelpDesk can be found here. If families/parents/guardians are seeking technical assistance, we recommend that they submit a ticket under their students' account or email
Board of Trustees Meeting
The next regular Board meeting is scheduled for Monday, January 11, 2021, via Zoom starting at 7 p.m.  Our agenda for our Monday meeting can be found here. All meeting agendas, recordings, and minutes are available online.
