MVLA Update - October 23, 2020

Cohorts Have Begun
We welcomed students to campus for academic support this week. Los Altos High School conducted cohorts for students participating in EL language testing, Boys Basketball, and at risk students.  Mountain View High School held cohorts for AVID seniors, at risk seniors, disengaged and non-attending students, Varsity Football, JV Football, Basketball, and Water Polo. Alta Vista held cohorts for students most at risk of not graduating.  We are currently seeking supervision for additional cohorts as we bring  targeted groups back for support.

MVLA Staff Suicide Prevention Training
On October 14th, MVLA hosted our annual all-staff Suicide Prevention training featuring a screencast from Shashank V. Joshi, MD, FAAP, DFAACAP (Stanford Psychiatry and the HEARD Alliance). The presentation focused on identifying the risk factors, the warning signs, and the protective factors of suicide. The screencast was followed by a Question and Answer session with Linda Lenoir, RN, MSN, CNS, PHN from the HEARD Alliance and Jasmine Lopez, MA, from the County of Santa Clara Behavioral Health Services Suicide Prevention department and the HEARD Alliance. The presentation also covered crisis intervention strategies and highlighted the mental health referral process via our student referral form.

All MVLA staff will also participate in the "Be Sensitive, Be Brave" suicide prevention training in collaboration with Santa Clara County’s Behavioral Health Services and Palo Alto University. Simultaneously, our student leadership groups (Ambassadors, SCL and ASB) will be launching a “Know the Signs” suicide prevention campaign as well.

A list of local mental health and social services agencies may be viewed at this link: List of Community Resources. And, if you or someone you know is in crisis or in need of immediate support, please call 911 and request a CIT Officer, or text HOME to 741741.

Wellness Wednesdays
MVLA has been continuing our Wellness Wednesdays with structured social and emotional curriculum through our partnership with the HAERT™ Program. Activities this month have included the importance of preventative strategies for maintaining our mental wellness; the need for intentional practice; introducing the physiology of stress; and the power of mindfulness and individual empowerment through choice. The HAERT™  Program expands upon the SEL foundation that we introduced to our students and staff in August, and the curriculum for this year will focus on Self-Awareness and Self-Management.

MVLA Board of Trustees
The Board of Trustees will next meet on Monday, October 26, 2020 at 7:00 p.m.  Meeting agendas, recordings, and minutes are available online.
