Hello MVLA Community,

We are pleased to welcome you back to the 2020-2021 school year. Please find our recent updates and other pertinent information below and on the district Communications & Information page on our website.

Thank you,

Mountain View Los Altos High School District

Canvas Training
As we start the 2020-2021 school year, we identified the need for Mountain View Los Altos Union High School District (MVLA) to adopt a Learning Management System (LMS) to better support and enhance remote instruction. The district has adopted Canvas as its LMS. Canvas is used not only by high schools but also by colleges and universities to streamline the use of educational technology tools in one place while providing the opportunity for a robust and rigorous academic experience, so MVLA students will be able to become proficient with its use in advance.

On Wednesday, August 12, over 3,500 MVLA students accessed a training course specifically for them.  Students learned how to navigate canvas, send and receive messages within Canvas, receive and submit assignments, and many other features of this powerful learning management system.

In addition, to help families become familiar with this new tool, MVLA has created a Canvas for Parents course that can be found here - https://mvla.instructure.com/courses/712.

Additional resources regarding Canvas are available on our district’s website at www.mvla.net/Canvas.

SAT & ACT Testing
Families may be wondering whether their students will be able to participate in SAT or ACT testing this fall given the uncertainty with the spread of covid-19. The Collegeboard and the ACT emphasize the importance of providing safe opportunities for testing and are working with testing sites to ensure this. Both systems are increasing the number of testing dates to accommodate for smaller groups of testing due to the 6 feet social distancing rules during testing. Although the dates are posted on the Collegeboard and ACT websites, it’s important for students to confirm with the testing sites if the test will take place given the fluid nature of covid-19.

The August 29 administration of the SAT is scheduled to move ahead as planned. The next ACT exam is scheduled for September 12. Again, it is important that the student check directly with the test center, including the test center's website, on the morning of the test to ensure it is taking place.

Lastly, both providers are exploring remote opportunities for taking these exams. The ACT already published opportunities for in-home proctoring starting in the winter. The Collegeboard has not officially announced that the SAT or the SAT Subject Matter may be taken remotely at this time.

Technology/Materials
To ensure students and staff were prepared for distance learning to begin, the MVLA Technology Department and the Personnel department have been working all summer to both survey and supply staff with the tools necessary for a successful school year. MVLA team members have been provided tools for distance learning and are ready to begin the year. Students needing wi-fi support or a computing device please contact us here.
