Visitors

All visitors, including parents, must report to the Attendance Office to obtain a visitor’s pass and parking permit. No visitor passes will be issued to students. No Non-MVHS students are allowed on campus without prior approval of an assistant principal.  Visitors should be prepared to present photographic identification when they come on campus.

Shadowing opportunities will only be provided on the first two Tuesdays in February.  This is a chance for future students to pair up with a freshman with similar interests and attend classes.  Transportation and lunch arrangements are the responsibility of the student who requests to shadow.  Brunch and lunch are available for purchase from our cafeteria.

Open Campus

Students may leave campus when they are not assigned to a class.  Students must be signed out by a parent or guardian in person or by telephone for doctor’s appointment before leaving campus.  The student must sign in upon return. If a student misses a class without being signed out prior to leaving, the student will get an automatic unexcused absence.  If students leave campus during an open period, they need to be careful to return to the next period without being tardy.

Food Service

The Cafeteria opens at 7:30 am for breakfast, then again for brunch and lunch.  A variety of hot and cold lunches and a la carte items are available.  See pages 44 – 45 for information regarding free and reduced lunches.

Messages For Students

It is the school’s policy to minimize disruptions to classrooms and to your student’s education. For this reason: We do not deliver messages to students except in cases of emergency.

We suggest that before school starts, your family work out a contingency plan if for some reason you are unable to follow through with your normal routine.

Please do not ask administrative assistants to remind students about dentist appointments or other activities, including changes in family plans. Also, do not send flowers, balloons or gifts to be delivered to students. We will not accept delivery. When attempting to reach your student at school, please be sure to bring picture ID with you.

Smoke-Free Environment

Possession of tobacco products by a student is a violation of state education code and state penal code. Use of tobacco products is prohibited on the way to school, during school hours, and on the way home from school and at all school activities.

Violations of this rule will result in the following increasingly severe penalties for students: warnings, parent conferences, suspensions, referral to Alternative Education. The Mountain View Police Department may cite students for possession of tobacco products.

Please note that the use of tobacco products by adults is also prohibited on campus. Adults using tobacco products will be asked to stop smoking or leave campus.

Student Parking

Limited student parking is available in the lot located on Bryant Avenue. We encourage students to make every effort to carpool. Permits may be purchased for $5.00 from the bookkeeper and are valid for one school year.  Permits do not guarantee a parking spot.  Spots are available on a first come, first serve basis. The Mountain View Police Department will cite vehicles without proper permits, student vehicles parked in staff parking areas and any vehicles parked in fire zones or green areas.  Student parking is a privilege and permits may be revoked without refund for unsafe, dangerous or reckless driving.

Bus Schedules

At the time of this publication, County Transit Bus Line 51 serves Mountain View High School. Line 51 stops at Truman and Bryant during school hours only. Starting at Moffett Field, it operates on Moffett Boulevard, Castro Street, Miramonte Avenue, Cuesta Avenue, Grant Road, and Bryant Avenue to the school. Line 51 operates in the reverse route in the afternoon.

For more information on exact boarding locations or help with trip-planning, call County Transit information at (800) 894–9908.  Updated schedules are also available in the MVHS Library and Bookkeeper’s Office.

Bus Passes

The district will provide a bus pass for the public transit system only to those students: (1) who qualify for the program based on household income, and (2) whose residences are two or more miles from the school of attendance. In order to participate in the program, a student must obtain and submit an application to the bookkeeper. Youth (ages 5-17) Monthly passes can be purchased at all Albertson’s Markets, Mountain View City Hall (Castro & Mercy), or Longs Drugs at El Monte and El Camino Real.

Library

The library hours are 7 am to 4 pm Monday through Friday.  We can be reached at 940-4619 or 940-4628.  Use of the library is part of the curriculum in many classes, and students learn research skills in the context of subject area assignments.  Students may borrow library materials and renew them as needed by asking at the circulation desk.  While we don’t charge late fines, we do require students to renew or return overdue materials before their grades or transcripts are mailed, get their yearbooks or purchase dance bids.

Computers, Internet Access & Appropriate Use Agreement

Mountain View High School has created a local area network with a connection to the much-publicized Internet. We also subscribe to an online service in our library. As this capacity continues to expand on our campus, our students will have more and more access to computers and worldwide sources of information. The purpose of this access is to support educational activities only.

Although we are exploring ways to block student access to inappropriate computer sites on the Internet, we rely on our Appropriate Use Agreement to enforce our limitations on student access at this time. Using our computers to access information both on our campus and at sites off-campus is a privilege. Inappropriate accessing of information or use of our system may result in the loss of this privilege for the duration of a student’s high school career. Students and parents will be asked to review our Appropriate Use Agreement, sign it, and return it to school before a student will be given an account on our system. To access the Internet from school, please complete the Agreement included in your student’s schedule packet and return it to their first period class on the first day of school. If you have any questions concerning this Agreement, please call the Bookkeeper at 940-4622 or your student’s teacher.

Textbooks

Textbooks and their care are extremely important to us. Textbooks will be picked up prior to school starting or on the first days of school.  Please help us protect these valuable resources. Students are responsible for loss or damage to the book, including books stolen from lockers and backpacks. The school is authorized to withhold student schedules, grades, transcripts and diplomas if bills for lost books are not paid. Contact TSS if you have any questions.

TSS/Book room

TSS (Teacher Support Services) or the book room  is located in a room off of the library.  TSS handles the check-out and check-in of all textbooks.  All books need to be returned when the student is finished with them.  Additional books may need to be checked-out during the school year.

Lockers

Lockers are issued on a first-come, first-served basis, with priority given to freshmen.  All lockers must be assigned by the bookkeeper or locks will be cut-off.  Students must supply their own locks. All lockers are used at your own risk. The school is not responsible for items left in lockers. As a result, students are responsible for the cost of any books or equipment missing or stolen from lockers.

P.E. Clothing

All students will be required to dress for their activity. Uniforms can be purchased from the bookkeeper at the start of the school year and at freshman orientation. Required items are:

  • T-shirt, $7.00
  • Shorts or sweat pants, $18.00
  • Heart-Rate Monitor Straps $5.00

Only black MVHS or plain black (with no adornment) sweatpants or sweat shirts are allowed for class.

Yearbooks

Yearbooks will be sold in combination with ASB cards for $70 at the beginning of school. See the form in the registration packet or on the MVHS website. The cost after this introductory offer is $55 for a yearbook and $25 for an ASB card.  Yearbooks will be distributed in early June to those students who have no outstanding fines.

Student ID & ASB Cards

All students will be issued a barcode-encoded student identification card when they have their photographs taken in their English classes at the beginning of the first semester-see website for dates.  This card will be used as identification for computer access and will identify them as an Associated Student Body (ASB) member (if they have purchased this option).

The ASB card entitles students to free or reduced admission to a wide variety of athletic and social events. The funds raised through the purchase of ASB cards support the various activities and functions on campus, including athletics, spirit, drama, dances, and more. ASB cards are sold in combination with yearbooks for $70 at the beginning of school, or $25 for only the ASB card.  Replacement cards are available from the school bookkeeper for $5.00.

Students participating in athletics and qualifying for an Athletic Block Letter must be current ASB cardholders to receive letters or pins. Also, students wishing to hold an ASB or class office must have a current ASB card.

Musical Instruments and School Equipment

Students are responsible for musical instruments and other equipment checked out to them. Instruments and equipment will be checked out in writing, with provision to include parent signature. Students and parents are responsible for replacement or repairs required for any reason while materials are checked out to them.

Bicycle Storage

To prevent thefts and encourage biking to school, a secure bicycle storage cage is provided for students.  The bike cage is located between the boy’s locker room and the swimming pool.  The bike cage is locked at 8:15 am until 2:30 pm daily.  The cage is also unlocked during lunch.  Students must provide their own locks.  MVHS is not responsible for thefts or damage to bicycles.
