Mountain View – Los Altos (MVLA) High School Foundation was established in 1982 by a group of parents of high school students concerned about the effects of decreased state educational funding. Over the years, our district has become expert at making do with less, but inadequate funding from the state still challenges our high schools to deliver the top-notch education our community expects and our students deserve.
The Foundation’s purpose is to raise money to fund educational programs that foster student academic success at our high schools. We solicit donations from parents of high school students and other members of the community.
Programs funded by the Foundation fall into three main categories: improving the classroom experience, enhancing the learning environment outside the classroom, and preparing students for life after high school.
-
To improve students’ classroom experience, we fund programs to decrease class sizes for freshman English and entry-level math. Also funded is software to provide online access to class assignments, grades, and graduation status. We also allocate funds for instructional imaging/audio technologies used to vitalize classroom lessons and make concepts more accessible to all learning styles.
-
To enhance learning outside the classroom, the Foundation funds coordinators for Tutorial Centers where students receive academic assistance free of charge. Centers are staffed by adult and student volunteer tutors. We also fund extended hours for our libraries, and pay for subscriptions to databases and tools for student research.
-
To better prepare students for post-high school life, the Foundation supports the administrative staff in our schools’ College and Career Centers . We also fund the Naviance College software system used to guide students and their families through the college admissions process. In addition, PSAT test fees are covered for sophomores and juniors.

Foundation members are proud we fund academic programs that address the needs of such a wide range of high school students. In fact, our programs benefit every student in the district in some way. And although essential to many students, these programs would not exist without the backing of the MVLA Foundation because of our schools’ limited resources.
We at the Foundation are also quite proud of our extremely low operating expenses. The time and energy contributed by our many passionate volunteers means that more of every dollar donated goes directly to our student programs.
Over the years, the MVLA High School Foundation has contributed nearly $5 million to the benefit of tens of thousands of students. The great majority of those students have gone on to college.
To meet our goal of raising $700,000 for the 2008-09 school year, we request a donation of $700 donation per student. We greatly value the participation of all our district families, so please give what you can. We hope we can count on your support!
